Zespół „Polonia” na występach w Grecji
Życie często rzuca nas w różne strony, a w tym roku wiatr poniósł nasz zespół „Polonia” aż na grecką wyspę Zakynthos na morzu Jońskim. Po długiej podróży samolotami, autokarami, a nawet promem, w końcu dotarliśmy do hotelu w miasteczku Argasi na wyspie Zakynthos. Tam czekał nas tydzień pełen plażowania, śródziemnomorskiej kuchni i oczywiście tańca. Mieliśmy szansę podzielić się kulturą polską oraz amerykańską występując na rynku głównym wyspy Zakynthos podczas Śródziemnomorskiego Festiwalu Zespołów Folklorystycznych. Oprócz tradycyjnych polskich tańców zaprezentowaliśmy nowy układ Rock ‘n’ Rolla, którego energia i ciekawe taneczne sztuczki zachwyciły tłumy turystów i lokalnej publiczności.
Poza próbami i występami mieliśmy też czas zapoznać się z historią greckiej wyspy Zakynthos, która słynie ze stromych, skalistych wybrzeży, głębokich, wyrzeźbionych przez morze jaskiń, turkusowej wody, egzotycznej fałny i koralowej podwodnej flory. Podziwiając zapierające dech w piersiach krajobrazy wybraliśmy się na całodniowy rejs statkiem na plażę wraków okrętów, które setki lat temu zatonęły z rąk śródziemnomorskich piratów. W powiewach słonego wiatru, podziwiając niepowtarzalne widoki na tle turkusowej wody, każdy z nas marzył o pozostaniu w Grecji na zawsze.
Najfajniejszy wieczór na wyspie spędziliśmy pod hasłem „Greckiej Nocy”, podczas którego tamtejsza grupa tancerzy zaprezentowała nam perełki swojego folkloru, oferując naukę kroków tradycyjnych greckich tańców. Pyszna kolacja na świeżym powietrzu oraz niezapomniane widoki typowo greckiej architektury biało-niebieskich domków na stoku wzgórza, tworzyły wyśmienitą atmosferę zabawy i relaksu w gronie najbliższych przyjaciół. Spędziliśmy wspaniały wieczór wśród tego co uwielbiamy najbardziej – dobrego jedzenia, skocznego tańca i ciekawej kultury.
W drodze powrotnej nie obyło się bez zwiedzenia słynnych ruin i budynków starożytnych Aten. Wraz z przewodniczką wyruszyliśmy na całodniową wycieczkę do Akropolu, greckiego parlamentu oraz wielu innych historycznych miejsc w centrum stolicy dawnej Europy południowej. Zauroczeni starożytnymi ruinami usytułowanymi na jednym z okolicznych wzgórz, z którego można było podziwiać wspaniałą panoramę miasta i okolic, nie mogliśmy wręcz uwierzyć w trwałość tej antycznej architektury, która przecież istnieje do dnia dzisiejszego już od 2,500 lat.
Opuściliśmy Grecję zachwyceni, wypoczęci, opaleni i wzbogaceni w wiedzę o starożytnej kulturze tego biało-niebieskiego kraju pozostawiając postanowienie powrotu.

Life often pulls us in many different directions, and this year “Polonia” Ensemble ended up traveling to the distant Greek island of Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea. Since 2014 is the year of the long-awaited International Festival of Polish Folk Dancing in Rzeszow, Poland, we decided to visit a country full of history and sunshine before returning to the homeland of our ancestors. After two long days of travel on planes, buses, and even a ferry boat, we finally arrived at our hotel in the town of Argasi on the island of Zakynthos. Ahead of us was a week full of sunbathing on the beach, Mediterranean cuisine, and, inevitably, dancing. We had the opportunity to share both our Polish and American cultures by performing on the main square of Zakynthos. Apart from our traditional Polish dances, we debuted our new Rock ‘n’ Roll routine which blew away both tourists and locals with its high energy and exciting tricks. Along with a Greek dance group which also performed traditional Greek dances, we had a wonderful time surrounded by two of the things that we love most – dancing and culture. Beyond practices and performances, we were able to
become more familiar with Greece and its history both in Zakynthos and in Athens. The island of Zakynthos is known for its rocky coastline with beautifully sculpted caves as well as its Shipwreck Beach. In order to see these amazing sights, we boarded a boat that would take us around the entire island and make a stop at this particular beach. As the salty air blew in our faces and every turn gave way to more spectacular views, I think each and every one of us entertained the idea of never leaving this Grecian paradise. We spent one of the most enjoyable evenings of the trip at a “Greek Night” where dancers showed and taught us the steps of traditional Greek dances. Along with this, a delicious supper outdoors in the crisp air and wonderful hilltop views of the typical Greek, white houses below us created a fantastic atmosphere for the entire evening spent in the company of our closest friends. Despite the fact that our stay in Greece was nearing its end, we knew that we could not leave this remarkable country without visiting the legendary ruins and buildings of ancient Athens. Accompanied by a local tour guide, we wandered off to see Acropolis, the Greek Parliament, and many other historical sites in the capital city. We could not believe the longevity of the age-old architecture that, to this day, stands strong though it was built over 2500 years ago. When the time finally came to continue our European tour in Poland, our entire group was rejuvenated, suntanned, and enriched with the new historical and cultural knowledge acquired throughout the trip. Although everybody was extremely excited to return to the country that represents our cultural identity, I know that the memories from our trip to Greece will never fade.
